Subscription box fulfillment: kitting, cutoffs, and customer churn

How sub-box brands keep cutoff dates without throwing inventory budgets out the window — and the kitting model that scales.

Three kitting models — pick one

Pre-kit: every box assembled before the cutoff. Fastest ship, highest carrying cost. On-demand kit: assembly at the moment of order. Slower ship, leaner inventory. Skip-kit: ship individual SKUs in one master pack. Lowest cost, most carrier friction.

Cutoff discipline

The 15th of every month is the most common cutoff in the US sub-box space. Boxes shipping on the 16th churn 2.2× faster than boxes shipping on the 18th. The 48-hour window between marketing cutoff and ship cutoff is where most brands lose subs. Tighten it.
